Wet belt replacement in Sudbury, Suffolk

The Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, Ford Transit 2.0 EcoBlue and Peugeot, Citroën & Vauxhall 1.2 PureTech engines use a timing belt that runs inside the engine oil. When that belt starts to break down, it can block the oil pickup and destroy the engine. We replace wet belts properly — correct parts, correct procedure, straight advice.

The basics

What is a wet belt — and why does it fail?

On most engines the timing belt runs dry, outside the engine, behind a plastic cover. On a "belt-in-oil" engine the belt sits inside and spins through the hot engine oil. It was done to cut friction, noise and emissions — but rubber and hot oil are not natural companions.

Over time the belt material degrades and sheds tiny rubber particles into the oil. Those particles are carried round the lubrication system until they reach the fine mesh oil pickup strainer in the sump. As it clogs, oil pressure falls, the turbo and valve gear are starved, and the weakened belt can jump teeth or snap — and on these engines, a snapped belt usually writes the engine off. Short journeys and town driving make it worse, because the oil rarely gets fully hot.

Engines we see with wet belts

Ford 1.0 EcoBoost

Fiesta, Focus, Puma, EcoSport, B-Max, C-Max, Transit & Tourneo Courier, Transit Connect (2012 onwards)

  • Belt-in-oil design driving the camshaft and, on many engines, the oil pump too
  • Ford's official schedule runs long — specialists widely advise replacing around 6 years or 100,000 miles
  • Later mild-hybrid builds moved back to a chain, so we always confirm the exact engine code before quoting

PSA / Stellantis 1.2 PureTech

Peugeot 208, 2008, 308, 3008, Partner · Citroën C3, C4, Berlingo, DS3 · Vauxhall Corsa F, Mokka (2014 onwards)

  • Early belts degraded well ahead of the original schedule, prompting an extended manufacturer warranty scheme
  • Interval now widely treated as 6 years or 100,000 miles, sooner with town driving and short journeys
  • Later builds switched to a chain — we check the engine code and build date so you only pay for the work your engine needs

Ford 2.0 EcoBlue

Transit, Transit Custom, Tourneo Custom, Mondeo (2016 onwards)

  • Belt-in-oil diesel design — the same wear pattern as the petrol engines, in a van that works hard for a living
  • Ford's schedule runs to 10 years or 144,000 miles, but high-mileage Transits on short, stop-start work often show belt wear much sooner
  • Vans are the engines we most often see already shedding rubber — we inspect the oil and sump before quoting

Warning signs of a failing wet belt

Seeing any of these? Stop driving and call us on 01787 743055. A wet belt inspection costs far less than the engine it protects.

The work

How we replace a wet belt

  1. 01

    Identify

We confirm the exact engine code and build date, and check whether your car has a belt or a chain before quoting.

  2. 02

    Inspect

Oil condition, dipstick and sump debris are checked so you know exactly how far any degradation has gone.

  3. 03

    Replace

Belt, tensioner and oil pickup screen are renewed with OE-quality parts, and the engine is refilled with the correct specification oil.

  4. 04

    Test & record

Oil pressure is verified, the car is road-tested, and the work is stamped into your service history.

If the engine has already been damaged, we can help there too — our workshop carries out in-house engine rebuilds, reconditioning and engine supply and fitting.
